Organic Farming and Organic Food – What It Means, Why Choose It

We work to produce the highest quality rice.

Behind Valoryz Market’s organic food range stands rigorous quality control. On this page, we’ve gathered what you need to know about organic farming: the core principles, what makes food organic, and how to recognize genuine organic products.

What Are the Core Pillars
of Organic Farming?

preserving and improving the health of soil, water, and air, the health of plants and animals, and the balance among them.

producing excellent quality food through agricultural and food industry practices that do not harm the environment

responsible use of natural resources

The Philosophy of Organic Farming

The European Union regulation on organic farming (EU 848/2018) defines organic farming as follows:

“Organic farming is a complex system encompassing farm management
and food production that combines the best environmental and climate protection practices, ensures a high level of biodiversity, and preserves natural resources.”

What Makes Organic Farming Different?

Seeds

Seeds must come from organic farming. GMO (genetically modified) seeds cannot be used in organic farming.

Nutrients

In organic farming, maintaining soil nutrient content and soil life can only be done with natural materials (manure, green manure, etc.). Soil nutrient content cannot be supplemented with synthetic fertilizer products.

Pest Control

Pesticides (insecticides, herbicides) cannot be used
to control pests and pathogens. To prevent damage caused by pests and weeds, alternative methods must primarily be used: mechanical treatment, heat treatment, natural enemies, crop rotation, natural-based products approved by NÉBIH for organic farming.

Processing

No synthetic chemicals may be used during the drying, cleaning, and storage of the crop.

What Does It Mean for Food to Be Organic?

A food product can be called organic if its organic ingredients reach 95–100%, and its production followed the EU’s strict organic regulations.

The possible 5% can only be ingredients that cannot be replaced with organic materials (e.g., salt), but the use of these ingredients requires authorization.

1. In the finished product, the proportion of organic ingredients is 95–100%.

2. The possible 5% can only be ingredients that cannot be replaced with organic materials (e.g., salt), but the use of these ingredients requires authorization.

3. The production, processing, storage, and transport of organic food is subject to strict national and European Union regulations.

Why Are Organic Foods More Expensive?

The higher price of organic foods primarily stems from the more costly production process: natural methods yield lower outputs, and processing and storage take place under stricter conditions.

Organic product production achieves lower yields at higher cost than conventional (chemical, fertilizer-based) cultivation, which
is the primary cause of the price difference.

Synthetic products cannot be used during processing and storage, which further increases technology costs that are reflected in the price.

However, the price difference is offset by the higher quality and the fact that consuming these products may be healthier.
Laboratory tests show no pesticide residue in the finished product.

Why Choose Organic Foods?

Choosing organic foods represents both a health and environmental decision: they are free from synthetic chemicals, and their production does not unnecessarily burden natural resources.

They contain no pesticide residues: the use of synthetic pesticides is prohibited in organic farming, so laboratory tests show no pesticide residue in the finished product.

Their nutritional value may be higher (vitamins, nutrients, and minerals): according to several studies, the vitamin, nutrient, and mineral content of organic foods may be more favorable compared to conventional products, partly due to farming based on natural soil.

Their consumption may have more favorable health effects: particularly due to the absence of synthetic chemicals, they are recommended for sensitive groups, young children, pregnant mothers, and consumers who are especially attentive to their immune system.

They contribute to environmental protection: organic farming avoids burdening soil and water resources with chemicals, resulting in long-term sustainable farmland and cleaner water.

What Shows That a Product Is Truly Organic?

A product’s organic origin is verified by certifications displayed on the packaging. In Hungary, two recognized labels are worth looking for:

Biokontroll Hungária Nonprofit Kft. or Bio Garancia Kft. trademark
