Passion
Károly Valentinyi first encountered rice grain in the mid-1980s while designing rice plantations. Shortly thereafter, with the help of Zsuzsanna Árvai and Orsolya Molnár, he began rice cultivation. To produce and process rice of appropriate quality, he built his own facility. Since 2002, rice processing has also been part of the portfolio. Beyond cultivation and product processing, Valoryz also participates in raw material development and rice variety maintenance. With the involvement of partners, they developed their own rice grain called “Fruzsina M,” which has already entered cultivation.
The most widely cultivated variety is currently the Hungarian rice variety M-488, which is medium-grain, has good yield capacity, and a clean taste. It can be prepared in many ways in the kitchen.
Knowledge and renewal in the rice fields
Valoryz is now jointly led by Károly Valentinyi and his daughter, Fruzsina. The company’s future goal is continuous capacity expansion, innovative technological development of the processing plant, and the production of modern rice-based products.

10 things worth knowing about Hungarian rice
1One of the oldest cultivated plants
Rice is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, with its ancestral home in Southeast Asia. It has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years and today feeds nearly half of the Earth’s population.
2How did it reach Europe?
In Central Europe, rice grain appeared in the 15th century through the Turks. In Hungary, the first organized rice cultivation dates back to the 18th century. Hungarian rice cultivation has since continuously adapted to the local climate and soil types.
3Hungary at the border of rice production
Hungary lies on the northeastern boundary of rice production, which means that rice can just barely grow here, but requires special conditions. This makes Hungarian rice special: a carefully cultivated, locally bound raw material.
4Climate and soil
Suitable climate, abundant sunshine, and a water-retaining soil layer are needed for rice production. This is perfectly available in the Great Plain, in and around Szarvas. The heavy soil of the Körös valley and abundant sunshine together create the microclimate in which rice thrives.
5Saline soil, abundant water supply
Rice grows excellently in saline soil conditions with the constant, abundant water supply of the Tisza and Körös rivers. Saline soils are unfavorable areas for other plants, but they are just right for rice.
6Habitat for nature
The marshy character of rice fields also affects biodiversity: it attracts waterfowl and provides a safe home for specially protected species. From grebes to herons, numerous bird species are regular visitors to the rice fields along the Körös rivers. Rice cultivation thus plays not only an agricultural but also an ecological role.
7Rich in nutrients
Hungarian rice is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals: in addition to low heavy metal content, it contains essential amino acids and beneficial fats. In the case of Valoryz rice, the uniquely low arsenic content is an additional advantage.
8Gluten-free and hypoallergenic
Rice is a naturally gluten-free grain, so it can be consumed by celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity. Due to its low allergen risk, it is considered a hypoallergenic food—not coincidentally one of the most common baby food ingredients.
9Versatile in use
Rice can be prepared as a side dish, in soup, risotto, or rice pudding, but ground into flour it can also be the base for gluten-free baked goods. It is also excellent for rice milk and breakfast rice drinks (such as our Ricely fruit rice drink).
+1Practical kitchen tip
Put a few grains of rice in the salt shaker and the salt will not clump—the rice grains absorb the moisture.
